We are all meant to move, and now Diabetes NZ is making sure Aucklanders can, with a free activity day in health and fitness facilities.

Exercise and good nutrition are key to reducing your risk of diabetes, or to help manage the condition. Diabetes NZ has teamed up with more than 35 YMCAs, pools and gyms around New Zealand to encourage everyone to play their part in tackling the country’s fastest-growing health crisis.

More than a quarter of a million New Zealanders have diabetes – with 40 additional people diagnosed every day in New Zealand.

Diabetes Action Month culminates in the Diabetes NZ Fitbit MoveMeant Day this Saturday, November 28, with everyone welcome to participate in a range of free activities.

Diabetes NZ is committed to fighting the epidemic and aims to compel the nation to be more aware of their risk factors for diabetes; and to create ways for communities to take action and “Join the MoveMeant”.

The number of New Zealanders with diabetes has doubled from 125,000 to 257,000 in the past 10 years. One in four people in NZ is estimated to have prediabetes, and in the majority of cases, their risk of developing diabetes can be improved through adopting a healthy lifestyle of exercise and a nutritious diet. A person’s risk of progressing from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes can be roughly halved if they lose weight, change their diet, increase exercise and/or have drug treatment.

Diabetes NZ Chief Executive Steve Crew says: “We are all naturally meant to move, we want to motivate everyone who can to make a positive change by getting active on November 28 and beyond.”

Auckland residents can “Join the MoveMeant” by participating in Diabetes NZ Fitbit MoveMeant Day on Saturday, across Auckland between 7.00am and 6.00pm.

All health and fitness facilities will host a free open days with access to exercise classes and use of facility equipment

“It’s important we offer practical ways for people to increase their level of exercise and we’re grateful for the support of these facilities who have helped make this initiative possible,” Crew says. “We hope those who join us on November 28 are inspired to continue with a healthy lifestyle as it will improve their risk factors for diabetes or if they have diabetes – type 1 or type 2 – help them manage their condition. Collectively, we can improve our nation’s health.”

Diabetes NZ Auckland Branch to attend 60th Anniversary event of the Auckland Medical Research Foundation

Auckland Medical Research Foundation

Auckland Medical Research Foundation marks 60th Anniversary and more than $62 million granted to medical research

Diabetes NZ Auckland Branch’s General Manager, Pam Elgar, will be attending the event on Monday

In 1955 an extraordinary group of 77 foundation members each donated 50 pounds to a capital fund for Auckland led medical research. They recognised that Government research funding would never be adequate to provide all that was required for a sound and stable research base in Auckland and started a drive for life members, annual members and donors to sustain the Foundation.

An endowment was set up in perpetuity for administration costs, enabling 100% of donations to go directly to research, which constituted a strong offering to potential donors. From small beginnings, with many notable New Zealanders contributing on the way, they grew a sustainable and enduring investment fund to provide research grants every year.

On the evening of Monday 23 November, around 300 Foundation members, descendants of early foundation members, donors and supporters, and recipients of grant funding will meet at a special event hosted by BNZ Partners to celebrate this milestone. After the opening words from the Minister of Health, Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman, Prof Sir Peter Gluckman, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister will present an address on the challenges and opportunities in this changing research environment and the many spillover benefits of New Zealand’s contribution globally.

Know your risk!

On 3 November 2015 we launched our inaugural Diabetes Action Month campaign. New Zealand is facing a diabetes epidemic and Diabetes NZ aims to tackle this growing problem by compelling the nation to be more aware of their risk factors for diabetes; and to take action for a healthier New Zealand.

Throughout the month of November, the Mobile Diabetes Awareness Van will be embarking on a roadshow across New Zealand, engaging with Kiwis nationwide to raise awareness of diabetes and to stress the importance of knowing the risk factors associated with the condition.

We are all meant to move so let’s get moving! Mark the 28th November 2015 in your diaries for a day of FREE fun, physical activities with nearly 40 recreational facilities and gyms throughout New Zealand hosting a Fitbit MoveMeant Day. Check out the schedule of events at the link below but if you can’t find something happening in your town, grab your friends and colleagues and get moving yourselves – organise a fun run, a swim, a game of touch rugby, softball or golf or just take a walk and help kick start our nation into getting more active every day.

To find out more about what we’re getting up to, including a schedule of events and how you can assess your own level of risk, please click the link below.
